Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you
are the slave to your emotions ~ Elizabeth Gilbert: Eat, Pray, Love
Despite all the advances in brain neuroscience and neurochemistry, only a fraction of the brain’s power is completely understood.
In addition to medical research, neuroscientists are also starting to explore and unravel the workings of the brain, especially into the topic of emotions.
Long thought to be a complex and enigmatic subject, researchers are learning more about how the brain controls emotions and how it emotionally flexible an organ it can be.
Already, geographic areas of the brain can be divided into emotional and cognitive divisions.
The following infographic demonstrates how the different parts of the brain contribute to human behavior and emotion. In addition, the six emotional styles – resilience, outlook, self-awareness, social interactions, attention, and sensitivity to context – also shape how the brain can retrain and retool itself in different situations.
Not only does this knowledge help with the field of medicine, but one day researchers are hoping to apply advanced knowledge about the brain to help with psychological issues.
