In my role as a Shamanic Storyteller I have seen first hand the transformative power of shifting our focus from our fears to our true desires and dreams. The quote “Miracles start to happen when you give as much energy to your dreams as you do to your fears” beautifully captures this principle.
At its core, this quote is about where we choose to put our attention and intention.
Fear is an emotion that can be all-consuming. It’s easy for us to get caught up in worry or anxiety about what might go wrong. But the truth is that focusing too much on our fears actually creates more of them. Our preoccupations become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Once we refocus our attention and our mental energy towards dreaming – imagining positive outcomes and possibilities – something powerful happens. We start attracting those things into our lives. This isn’t just some magical thinking. There are proven psychological principles at work here.
Our brains are wired for negativity bias: they’re designed to notice potential threats or dangers so that we can protect ourselves. Unfortunately, this means that if left unchecked, negative thoughts will dominate over positive ones every time!
This does not have to be the case. With practice anyone can learn to refocus their thoughts and choose more consciously what they want to think about.
By actively choosing where we direct our thoughts each day – whether toward fear or possibility – we become masters not victims of own minds.
We can build a habit of self-awareness that trains our brains to seek out constructive and patterns of thinking that bring us more confidence, happiness and joy.
Once these new neural pathways are established through consistent practice, people tend to feel enabled to make proactive choices that lead to improved mental health and better outcomes.
Let’s be clear though, focusing on your dreams doesn’t mean ignoring reality either. I am not a fan of spiritual bypassing nor would I encourage people to pretend that things are OK when they are not. But, rather than getting stuck in hopelessness, it’s important simply to acknowledge where we are NOW, without getting caught in a loop of hopelessness, We can then affirm where we want to be. Once you recognise your desired goal it’s critical to take appropriate action towards our dreams and move forward constructively.
The benefits of adopting such an attitude towards life are manifold. We feel empowered instead of powerless. We experience a greater sense of self governance leading to a happier emotional state physically.
Our bodies respond positively too. Stress levels decrease. Our immune systems strengthen. Our sleep improves. And perhaps most importantly, we gain the confidence to start building momentum towards achieving goals. We become masters of our own fate and success – not victims of our negative imagination.
