Do you ever get ‘blue’ days?
You know the ones I mean, when life gets a bit on top of you and loses its meaning and lustre, and despite everything that needs to get done, it takes a real effort to crank up, get moving and motivated?
When you think about it, it’s not surprising we get flat and down days form time to time. For many of us, life is full up to the brim. Sadly, it’s not all fun and laughter, and if you are like 95% of the population chasing the clock and trying to get through your TO DO list, it’s all too easy to become overloaded with everyday just-getting-by demands and pressures that suck up our time.
We all have so many needs, it’s a wonder that we ever get half of them met. And the truth is, a lot of the time, we don’t. We want balance in our lives, but the fact is when time is at a premium it’s often the things we enjoy most, the ones that bring us joy and keep us healthy in body, mind and spirit, that get pushed to the sidelines.
Once you make the time to appreciate your efforts, slacken the pressure and reward yourself you’ll be amazed how much better you feel. After all, there’s no one on Earth who deserves your time that you is there? So what can you do here and now to help regain a sense of balance and ignite our “joie de vie” again?
Here are a few mood booting tips to help perk you up and bring back your pizzazz:
Tip 1: Schedule some special ‘relax and reward’ time for yourself in your calender.
Make that YOU time sacrosanct. Actually, write it in your planner or diary, and no matter what happens, keep the appointment with yourself. If you genuinely can’t get a day off, how about reserving out a few hours. And if that’s still too much of a stretch, carve out 15 to 30 minutes once a day to relax unwind and re-energise.
Tip 2: BREATHE. INHALE. EXHALE. Ahhhh.
Take 15 minutes to breathe and listen to music you love. For me, breathing rhythmically to Pachelbel’s Canon (6 minutes twice over) with my eyed closed allows the day’s build up of tension to melt right out of my body. It’s amazing how refreshed you will feel. Try it.
Tip 3: Stop and Smell the Flowers.
If you have been feeling a touch dowdy and worn out, there is something quite luxurious and rejuvenating about a great fragrance. It seems that the right smell will trigger positive reactions in your brain and can quickly reduce your stress levels, energise your mind and lift your mood. Essential oils such as Rose Geranium, Mandarin, Frankincense, Blue Chamomile, Rosewood, Lemon and Sandalwood are perfect.
Add a few drops of your favorites to a bath, or simply mix 10 drops into a 100 ml bottle of almond oil – give it a shake – and every time you wash your hands, rub a little of the oil into them. Then, cup your hands over your nose and take a few deep breaths. It will bring you the glorious sensation of looking and feeling good in no time flat.
Tip 4: Get your body moving.
Take a swim, a walk in nature, dance to an upbeat song you love. This upbeat track and lyrics from Jennifer Lopez – Let’s Get Loud does it for me. What does it for you?
Tip 5: Get together with people who energise you in a place that makes you feel good.
When you’re tired or feeling flat you can be extra sensitive to negativity form others and your environment, so make a point to keep your distance from family, friends or environments that zap your energy, cause conflict or bring your down.
Tip 6: Drop your TO DO List for a day and replace it with a DON’T list.
Throughout the day, make a list of things that don’t make your day, like worrying, getting stressed out, feeling insecure, moaning about negative things or people. Add whatever other energy zapping thoughts or activities you come up with and do something from this list of tips instead.
Tip 7: Get positive!
Just like our young friend in this motivation video, for five minutes a day, say nice, positive and uplifting things about yourself and your life while looking in the mirror. Do this every day and I guarantee that you will start to feel brighter and any negative chitter chatter that drones on in your mind will gradually get silenced.
BONUS Tip: Look Forward
Quite simply, having something to look forward to makes you ‘feel good’. No matter what is going on in your life, however mundane, routine or chaotic it may be, when you have plans, your future seems bright and energised. It actually makes you feel better about the day. Anticipation is key to your motivation and wellbeing so plan something special and significant for you. Make sure it is out of the ordinary and it’s something that you really want to do and experience. And plan to enjoy every minute.
