Oxytocin The Love Hormone vs.Cortisol the Stress Hormone: A Complete Comparison

Everyone knows that stress is bad for you but do you know why?

We have two opposing hormone responses to life.
1:   The fight or flight hormones cortisol and adrenaline – these speed up your heart rate and create the hyper-alert state which allows you to rapidly react your way out of danger.
2:  The comfort and trust hormone oxytocin, which has the exact opposite effects to of cortisol.

This is a really instructive video about the effects of stress on your mind and body and illustrates how reducing stress and inducing the relaxation response can help to reverse ageing, reduce pain and increase your cognitive responses.

It’s well worth a watch.

About cortisol – The Stress Hormone

When cortisol levels remain high in your body for long periods of time, it begins to break down non-essential organs and tissues in order to maintain high levels of glucose in the blood to feed the vital organs. You literally start to cannibalise yourself! In addition, these high levels of stress hormones cause high blood pressure, chronic anxiety, weight gain (especially around the waist), depression, weakened immunity, mental and physical fatigue, toxin buildup, heart disease, and make you moody and prone to emotional outbursts

About oxytocin – The Love Hormone

Our body has a built-in mechanism to counter stress. It is the anti-stress hormone oxytocin. This hormone is sometimes called the love or cuddle hormone as it increases feelings of trust and emotional bonding. It also promotes eye contact, touching, stroking, cuddling, cooing or mother speak and after birth, it is responsible for triggering lactation and labour.

  2. Hi Maya,
Well, I thought I should at least say Hello! I love Glasgow.
Back in the 1980s I was toast of the town and featured often in The Sunday Mail
(allergy doctor with fascinating stories, etc….)
I used to hold sessions at one of what were then Stakis hotels.
Then later in a hotel next to Queen St Station.
Looks like it’s now called The Mllennium 🙂
Liked to eat at Rogano’s (mafia-run). Is it still there?
Ubiquitous Chip – is that still there?
I now live in Las Vegas 🙂

It was nowhere like a lightning it struck me why not look for a connection between cortisol and oxytocin. In a cortisol flood world, oxytocin filled environment may provide relief from personal to public benefit. It is really heartwarming to see an article of such scientific thought I am looking for stories and studies to return back to your page to share my humble experiences
